Like I’ve been saying, “We put a nice little weekend together”. After the botanical garden, Betsy and I took a 15 minute cab ride to Nayon, a sleepy town east of Quito and down the hill. Right away Nayon felt more like our pace. The main industry of this small town is selling greenhouse plants. The gardener we purchased our plants from, Juan, is a third generation gardener and also does work for the school. It was hard to decide, but we got a few things we had always wanted but never had because of the sheer expense in the states or how restricted the environment was back home. In the end, we purchased two different palms, four rose plants, a lime tree, an orange tree, some tomato plants, and azalea bush. Juan even loaded up everything in his brother’s pick up truck, drove us home, and helped us plant the rose bushes. Amazing.
A Nice Little Weekend- Part 1
We put a nice little weekend together. On Saturday, we took the ten minute walk from our apartment to Jardin Botanico, an 18,000 square meter botanical garden in Parque Carolina. There were many areas containing various trees, bushes, flowers, and cacti. The highlight was definitely the Orchid rooms, which consisted of two separate greenhouses of differing climates. Coming in as a close second was a humid greenhouse containing carnivorous plants. In the slideshow, these are the tubular shaped flowers. The two species below traps insects by either drowning them at the bottom of the flower or closing a lid, trapping the insect. I’m definitely going to keep my head on a swivel in the jungle.
Old Town
We went on a tour of the historic center of Quito today. We visited Panecillo, a hill in the center of old town that has a statue of the Virgin at the top, as well as several cathedrals and the presidential palace. The old town has a European feel to it and is a UNESCO World Heritage Centre. Once again, the vistas from anywhere in this city are stunningly beautiful.
Parque Metropolitano Bike Ride
On the east side of Quito is Parque Metropolitano, the largest urban park in South America clocking in at nearly twice the size of Central Park in NYC. It’s on a ridge so it overlooks the city to the west and then down the next valley to the east. The park is full of trails, playing fields, picnic areas with grills and covered structures, as well as large pieces of art. It’s also home to horses and alpacas. The topography consists of rolling hills and cliffs covered with Eucalyptus trees, bushes, vines, and grasses.
There is an east entrance to the park a very short bike ride from our front door. I was excited with what I found; great trails with endless loop choices that will get my heart rate going and feed my soul. I also got my first glimse of Cotopaxi, the 19,347′ volcano to the East of the Parque.
Escuela
I began teacher in-service days at Academia Cotopaxi on Tuesday and will continue teacher work days next week. School for students starts on September 1st. The campus for the school is beautiful and very open with lots of outdoor space. This week, the school has provided us with lunch, a three course sit down meal of traditional Ecuadorian food. Today’s lunch included locro, a potato based soup, fried Tilapia and rice, and ice cream for dessert. I was the only person who received 2 scoops of ice cream, possibly because I cleaned my other plates and they thought I was still hungry :).
Our Neighborhood
It’s been nice being in our place and getting things taken care of. We only moved in yesterday but it seems days ago. Things that are still punch list items for other teachers were already done when we moved into our place. Furnishings down to bed sheets, internet, and TV; we feel very fortunate. Everything’s been put away, except our boxes which are still in transit, though it’s hard to remember what we even shipped other than clothes so we’re not sure what more we need than what we have.
This afternoon we were able to take a walk around our neighborhood and take in some views. We can’t wait to discover the neighborhood restaurants and explore Parque Metropolitano.
Settling In
We arrived in Quito on Thursday night after a long but relatively easy day of travel. After being greeted by the school director and elementary principal, we were taken to another teacher’s apartment which was where we have been staying until today. After apartment hunting all day on Friday and Saturday morning, we finally found a place that we can call home while we are living in Quito. It is a fully furnished apartment that has a private yard and is close to two large parks. We spent most of today moving in and are getting settled just in time for me to start in-service days on Tuesday. More pictures and posts to follow. Buenos tardes!
Getting Ready to Go
We have two more weeks in Crested Butte, Colorado before we begin our next adventure in Quito, Ecuador. While we will all miss the beautiful mountains and our friends very much, we are excited to try something new for a little while.
